Opposing angles

The image that inspired the background to this lettering is not resin, as one might have guessed. I was at a conference when this art was presented in one of the projects. It would be a disservice to the story if I tried to retell it, and also quite the workout for my memory, so I will just give the basics. A cosmetics company wanted to breathe new life into their products.

Often with my personal art, I would try to create complicated backgrounds from simple elements. This background started as a series of diagonal lines, that I copied and flipped so that I could intersect them in different ways. Though the lettering includes the word ‘call,’ this quote has nothing to do with telephones, they were simply an interesting element to add to give the background some variety.

They hired a creative, whose passion was photography, who had not worked in cosmetics advertising before. This resulted in a suite of beautiful abstract images, made by mixing nail polish and photographing it with a macro lens.

I was so inspired by this nail polish series that I used it on another background too.

It’s always struck me that the only truly finite resource we have as human beings on earth is time. And in a grand display of the perversions of human nature, on a whole we have made time expensive.

I love making art, but I am only able to when I have spare time. And generally, spare time for me means time away from working, which means less income. If there’s an alternate reality where I was born into a different place and time, and lucked out with rich parents whose wealth I would inherit… I hope that version of me is out there using all that inherited wealth to spend time making art, all day every day. In this reality however - I gotta spend my time figuring out how to get paid!
